Essential oil

Highly aromatic oil present in various parts of certain plants, often in minute cavities (oil glands); in leaves, petals or fruit (e.g. in lemon rind); or mixed with resins as a surface exudation (e.g. in pelargoniums). In many plants the oil is a mixture of several pure oils such as peppermint oil (piperitol), lemon oil (citral) or oil of thyme (thymol) in varying proportions. Originally termed ?essential? oils because each was considered the essence of a particular perfume.
