Gland

In its strict sense, any small appendage, protrusion, depression or cavity, in or upon a plant organ, which exudes or contains some liquid or sticky substance such as sugar or resin. Most common are the nectar glands (nectaries) in the base of many flowers, exuding nectar to attract insects or birds that in return pollinate the flowers. In the broader sense the term is often applied to any small swelling or thickening, e.g. on a leaf margin or stalk.
