Legume

Any member of the large plant family Fabaceae (Leguminosae), characterized by their fruits like peas or beans. Most have root nodules containing bacteria that can convert the air?s nitrogen into a form that the plant can utilize. The family is divided into 3 subfamilies, the largest containing all the pea-flowered legumes, another containing mimosas and acacias, and the third containing cassias and bauhinias (among many other genera). In botany the term legume has also been used to describe the fruit type.
