Lichen

Member of a large group of somewhat moss-like plants that are in fact composed of fungal tissues within which dwell single-celled algae, the 2 organisms having a symbiotic relationship. Lichens grow on tree trunks, twigs and even leaves as well as on rocks and the soil surface. On trees they are epiphytes not parasites.
