Monocotyledon

The smaller of the 2 great classes into which the flowering plants (angiosperms) are divided, the larger being the dicotyledons. As the name implies, monocotyledons have only 1 seed leaf and additionally they mostly have parallel-veined leaves, flower parts in multiples of 3, and no cambium layer in the stems. Only a minority of monocotyledons are trees or shrubs, for example the palms, aloes, yuccas, dracaenas and cordylines.
