Nitrogen-fixing

(of micro-organisms) The ability to absorb nitrogen from the atmosphere (of which it is the most abundant gas) and combine it with hydrogen and oxygen to form simple inorganic molecules such as ammonia and nitrous acid that higher plants can absorb. Nitrogen-fixing organisms such as the bacterium Rhizobium and some blue-green algae may form symbiotic relationships with higher plants, allowing the latter to thrive in nitrogen-deficient soils.
