Ray (medullary ray)

(in wood) The bands of tissue that run across the grain from the inner core of a tree trunk to the outer boundary of the wood. Each ray runs along a radius in a cross-section of the trunk. They vary greatly in size from large and conspicuous as in oak timber, to fine and hardly visible as in pine.
