Wood

The main conducting and supporting tissue in trees and shrubs, found only in dicotyledons, formed by the cambium layer on its inner side and termed xylem in plant anatomy. Sapwood, which is the outer living layer of xylem, conducts water and dissolved nutrients from the roots to the leaves. Heartwood is dead xylem and its function is merely support. Xylem cell walls are composed of the carbohydrates cellulose and lignin.
