Eriogonum
|
From western North America, this genus includes about 150 annuals and perennials and small evergreen shrubs of varied habit, normally growing from a basal rosette of leaves. Small flowers appear in clusters or umbels and the fruit is a 3-angled achene. They are good rockery or background plants in the drier garden, and are also grown for cut and dried flowers. |
CULTIVATION: Adaptable to a wide range of climates, Eriogonum will grow in full sun to part-shade in well-drained, preferably sandy, soil. They require plenty of water in warm conditions, but need to be drier in winter. Remove spent flowerheads, and propagate from seed sown in spring or from cuttings. Root clumps of perennial species may be divided. |
