Plant Species of the genus Chironia

Information about this genus
Name: Chironia
Cultivation: CULTIVATION: Plant in full sun with well-drained soil that does not become waterlogged in winter. Most will tolerate light frosts but will rot in constantly cold, wet conditions. Other than an occasional trim, pruning should not be necessary. Propagate from seed or layers.
Description: A genus of 15 species of perennials, subshrubs and shrubs found in South Africa and Madagascar. They have narrow leaves in opposite pairs and in spring produce small starry flowers, usually at the stem tips, that may be carried singly or in small sprays. Small berry-like seed capsules follow the flowers and ripen around Christmas time (Southern Hemisphere), hence the common name, Christmas berry.
