Plant Species of the genus Calycanthus

Information about this genus
Name: Calycanthus
Cultivation: CULTIVATION: Although difficult to propagate from cuttings (layering or seed being preferred), allspice is not difficult to grow. They prefer cool moist soil with ample summer water in a sunny or partly shaded position. The flowers do not last well in low humidity.
Description: Resembling magnolias, but in the family Calycanthaceae, the aromatic deciduous shrubs of this temperate East Asian and North American genus of up to 6 species have similar characteristics. They grow to around 10?ft (3?m) tall with a considerable spread, have large elliptical leaves and strappy, many-petalled flowers in late spring and summer. Although the flowers are sometimes small and have rather dull colors, they are borne on the new growth and stand out well.
