Description: This genus of 2 deciduous shrubs, both native to North America, has tough flexible branches, simple alternate leaves, and fruit which is a small red or greenish drupe with 4 segments. The insignificant yellow flowers have no petals and open in the spring before the leaves appear. Twigs and bark are used by Native Americans for making rope and weaving baskets. All parts of the plant are poisonous and may cause skin irritation, and the fruit also has a narcotic effect.
