Cultivation: CULTIVATION: These trees need good drainage. Severe frost will quickly defoliate them, but is unlikely to do permanent damage. Pruning is not normally necessary apart from the removal of competing leaders in the early stages. Propagate from seed in spring.
Description: This small genus of 3 species in the Meliaceae family, native to southern Asia, Australasia and tropical Africa, has many local geographic forms. All are deciduous trees or large shrubs with alternate, pinnate or bipinnate leaves and showy flowers in long panicles. They are valued for their rapid growth and adaptability to a wide range of soils and climates, including dry conditions, although the best specimens are found on fertile alluvial soils.
