Cultivation: CULTIVATION: Nyssas prefer well-drained, moist, fertile soil in sun or part-shade. Little pruning is required apart from the removal of competing leaders in the early stages. Seeds can be collected as soon as they are ripe and should be sown in autumn immediately, before they dry out. Alternatively, propagate from half-hardened cuttings in mid-summer.
Description: This is a small genus of about 5 species of deciduous trees from North America and eastern and southeastern Asia; all are noted for their spectacular foliage colors in autumn. They are named after the water nymph of Greek mythology because of their liking for a reliable water supply. Most species inhabit moist land on the margins of streams, lakes and swamps; they are rarely successful on dry soils. The leaves are simple, the flowers inconspicuous and the fruits small and bluish.
