We live on a corner lot in Bolton Ontario. The lot is surrounded by a chain link fence and we would like to plant hedges around our lot along the fence line. I would like to know what are my options in hedges considering i would like them to a minimum of 6 feet tall along the side of the house and perhaps much taller around the back although it would be nice if they were compact. Preferable coniferous and preferable not too high maintenance. I would like to plant a flower bed along the inside of the fence so it is important that the leaves or needles would not hinder the growth of the flowers or hurt the soil in the flower beds. Thank you.

Well, if you already have a fence you could also look at some climbers that would grow faster than the hedges.

For evergreen hedges you shouldn't plant the needle leaves because you will find that it is really hard to grow flowers.

Black Forest Cedar will grow to a height of 5 - 7 feet.

Pyramidal Cedar however would grow about 10 - 20 feet.

How high is the chain link fence that you have surrounding the lot?
