watering the garden

I just have a quick question, I have a flower and vegetable garden and I was just wondering how often I should water my gardens.  SHould I water every day or every couple of days.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

Sarah

Re: watering the garden
The rule of thumb for watering gardens is ,if there is one inch or more of rain , no watering is required. If not , soak the soil deeply once per week ,more or less depending on temperature and humidity.  The water should penetrate the soil to a depth of at least 6 inches.    Too frequent light waterings are not recommended because it will not encourage deep root development.

This year I over watered my onions and the tops died . I had the sprinkler on them for several hours , then we had unexpected rains for a few day.
