Outside, even more than in, the "floor" has a huge impact on the overall effect, and decorating your garden has to start with the groundwork. Perversely, the smaller the area, the harder the
floor has to work. Where there is plenty of space, sweeping lawns are fine. Where space is at a premium, it may hardly seem worth getting the mower out, and a combination of hard
and soft surfaces becomes more sensible and visually pleasing.

The clay-tiled floor and brick retaining walls of an old, demolished greenhouse make an evocative setting for a herb garden and a focal point within the whole context of this established garden. A similar effect could be achieved using new tiles designed for outside use, laid diagonally in alternating colours.
