This is a particularly effective way of softening uninspiring areas of large concrete slabs. Try planting a miniature herb lawn that releases its aroma as you brush past. Chamomile (the nonflowering variety 'Treneague') and thyme are particularly effective.
Or you can plant larger herbs, such as lavender and sage. Low-growing flowers, such as alyssum, violets, violas, pinks or any of the alpines, will provide a subtle but telling splash of floor-level colour.
An alpine garden planted into an old millstone gives this floor an extra dimension.
